All New Gorilla Painting

There are few things finer than spending a bit of time painting a gorilla. Not actually painting one, of course, that would be foolhardy… I am, in this case, referring to setting some time aside to study the beauty and majesty of such a glorious animal. In this particular case it’s a female Western Lowland Gorilla. There were no real tricks or even any particularly interesting processes involved in this digital painting it was just a case of sitting in front of the computer splashing pixels around until a gorilla emerged. One interesting feature of this composition is the fact that the subject is making eye contact with the viewer. It’s generally a pretty bad idea to make eye contact with a gorilla as it is usually viewed as a sign of aggression but the gorilla that this painting is based on is one of the older females at London Zoo, so I was able to get lots of photos of her looking directly at me or rather the camera lens. As far as paintings go this one was particularly enjoyable to paint, I loved every minute of it.
