Here we have “Arr, Jim Lad (Atmospheric Diving Suit)”. This composition came about after seeing a Series IV JIM suit during a visit to the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, UK. These suits were made in the 70s by UMEL and allowed deep dives at atmospheric pressure and the name comes from Jim Jarret, the test diver of the earlier Tritonia Diving Suit designed by “Pop” Peress in the 20s/30s. The Bond film connoisseurs amongst you may remember Roger Moore being attacked underwater by a bad guy in a JIM Suit in “For Your Eyes Only”.
After some initial sketchbook drawings I started playing around with shapes in 123D Design and ended up with an alternative take on the JIM suit concept.
Once a suitably dramatic pose was selected I painted the illustration in Photoshop.
…and here is some of the development work, consisting of sketchbook drawing, 3d modelling and digital painting…
